Soweto Gospel Choir, “Freedom” More than 15 years into its existence, this South African ensemble continues to delight and dizzy audiences with their glorious sound. The choir owns several Grammys already, and has worked with everyone from U2 and Peter Gabriel to Chance the Rapper. Here the group delivers a true emotional and sonic journey from joy to sorrow and quiet strength, in-the-pocket grooves to unfettered, truly free singing. Traditional anthems commingle with the likes of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and gospel standard “Jesus on the Mainline.”
Key tracks: “Umandela Uthi Ayihlome Ihlasele,” “Freedom Medley: Jikijela/Rolihlahla Mandela,” “Ndikhokele O Yehova”
